PMOs in 2025: New Research
| by Carrie Capili
The good news 15 years later is that PMOs are more highly regarded than ever as they continue to deliver value and continuously improve processes.
The State of the PMO 2025 research report will be published in the coming weeks with much gratitude to those participants who continue to help us bring this research to the industry! In advance of the full report, here is a quick preview of what we’re seeing behind the scenes as we analyze the data real time.
The State of the PMO was designed more than 15 years ago and continues to evolve to help us understand current practices and industry trends that will lead to improved PMO strategic impact and enterprise success. By sharing experiences, respondents help their organizations benchmark their PMO against others and build a business case to strengthen their PMO.
And it has been quite the journey for the PMO! In our first report in 2010, the PMO had become a central structure for standardizing the practices of companies to deliver their projects, but there was much uncertainty surrounding the future of the PMO. There were a lot of questions identified, including how many companies have PMOs, how large are they, what are their budgets, what are their challenges, and what value does a PMO really add to the company?
People wanted answers!
So we continued our research efforts to create a knowledge base and provide a picture of what high-performing PMOs were doing to increase their project success and also what pitfalls could be identified and avoided along the way.
The good news 15 years later is that PMOs are more highly regarded than ever as they continue to deliver value and continuously improve processes. According to this year’s research:
- PMOs are strategic.
- High-performing PMOs contribute a significantly higher percentage of value in all measures of performance.
- More than half of organizations have not seriously questioned the value of the PMO.
And those are just a few stats we’ll be uncovering in the coming weeks. We’re identifying the top five PMO challenges, the top five PMO priorities over the next 24 months, the PMO and Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the PMO as a Service (PMOaaS).
So stay tuned as we unveil The State of the PMO 2025 and continue the conversation around the future of the PMO!
