Project Management Carried On During 2020: Here's How

June 24, 2021 | by Jeannette Cabanis-Brewin

Virtual project management kept the gears turning and yielded organizational performance gains.

In Jan. 2021, PM Solutions Research conducted a survey to determine what project management strategies companies had used during the pandemic to continue meeting goals, and how well those had worked, both within projects and for the organization as a whole.

The most compelling finding was that organizations achieved better performance in 2020 than in previous years!

This boost in organizational performance--as measured by an array of metrics, from financial performance to employee satisfaction -- may be traceable to a heavier reliance on virtual project management strategies and tools, along with virtual training. In particular, high performers in the study doubled down on existing virtual training strategies. They also were quick to provide a variety of types of support for remote workers.

In fact, one of the hallmarks of the most successful organizations in the study was the sensitivity and supportiveness of the culture. It has been widely researched that engaged employees create more value, and during the pandemic, those who experienced trust, transparency, flexibility and financal support from their organizations no doubt went the extra mile.

We'll be drilling down into specific areas of this study here and on the PM College blog over the next few weeks. Meanwhile, take a look at the executive summary here.
